Anyone Can Give: The New Philanthropy
[slideshow]We all like to think we can be of benefit to others, but how often do we “give” and do we realize the many facets of philanthropy? I had the distinct pleasure of photographing Peter Buffet recently–yes, Warren Buffet’s philanthropic son (who is also a very talented musician). Unassuming and thoroughly engaging, he reminded his listeners that you don’t have to give away millions or even thousands to make a difference. Small monetary donations are just as effective, as are gifts of time, attention, ideas, sharing the stories of those you meet, and volunteerism. Wikipedia says the meaning of philanthropy is “the love of humanity.” That love can be shown in many ways. Peter and his wife Jennifer believe that men and women must work together to solve the world’s challenges–working as equals – not one better or more important than the other. Check out their site www.novofoundation.org. When you read about their foundation you’ll know why the duo was chosen in 2009 as one of Baron’s Top 25 most effective philanthropists.
Right in our own backyard is www.gulfcoastgives.org which offers ways to give back to those as far south as Boca Grande and as far north as Manatee County. I really like this site because it’s easy AND fun to use. You simply click on a category where you can “buy” Nature, Hope, Culture, Happiness, or Smarts. And each category shows how many more dollars are needed to meet the organization’s goals. You can even buy a Give Card (well…like a gift card). Cool! Have fun giving! Try a new approach. It feels really good.
