This bench, in the lobby of a Publix market in north Sarasota, hosts many a body and soul. From the ladies chatting and awaiting their transportation, a man studying his piccolo music, Gwen taking a break from the meat counter, hoping for a winning lotto ticket, “strangers” sharing space – a photographer finds this scene and it’s temporary inhabitants a curiosity. Every day, people rest here, an urban stump for the weary traveler. Some are lost in thought, others happily talk with passers by – all are curious about a photographer with a phone and why one would want to take such a photo. After a brief explanation (or lack thereof!) they say, “yes, sure.” Life goes on, people come and go, sit for a spell, and the series continues. More to follow.

When the creative director at Sarasota Magazine asked if I’d “give voice” to our local Islamic Society via photos of individuals, couples, their mosque, my inner voice shouted, “Absolutely!!!” Their photographs and word stories are below in the link to Susan Burns’ insightful and beautifully written article. Read Susan’s piece and hear, know, and embrace the uniqueness and beauty of each of our voices, for we are all members of earth’s choir.

I’m so grateful to have had these rich experiences, conversations, making pictures. Amani and Shiraz have made themselves available since our meeting last year for the Unity Awards. Their kindness and willingness to share facts and stories about their work and friends, family and faith, overwhelmed me. Each person I photographed welcomed me to the mosque and their evening meal. My gratitude to each of you for participating and inviting us into your lives.

The photographer’s eye, roving, seeking the light, observing surfaces, texture, shadow, shape – all reflected in the people I pass on the street, or for a few moments in a planned shoot. Most of the faces here were taken at random (with permission) with the iPhone; a few with the 35 mm. A face: the eyes, skin, shape, framing with brows and/or hair, all say so very much and especially remind me of our common “being-ness.” Eyes… some have spoken their stories with the photographer; others have few words (maybe a nod, perhaps another language, and certainly all have allowed me into their very personal space). Depth, life, feeling, being. This human connection (we have same with other beings/animals) is intense and loving and beautiful. I see you…

The recently published 2017 LifeLink project, photographed by Barbara Banks Photography, highlights individuals and families impacted by organ and tissue donation – Gifts of Life. These amazing individuals and their families represent varying ages, varying communities, diverse backgrounds. What they have in common is a bond of giving and/or receiving life through an organ transplant. The precious Gifts of Life – heart, liver, kidney or other lifesaving organ given by an incredible act of compassion and grace – generate countless stories of love, loss, gratitude, survival, struggle, hope, life and death. We traveled to Puerto Rico, Georgia, Alabama and to various Florida communities to meet and photograph these ordinary AND extraordinary people. The photos and stories shared represent PEOPLE, ALL PEOPLE. We shared with people in their homes and their environs: a rural Georgia cattle ranch and an historic courthouse; the glistening waters of Puerto Rico; the vibrant blossoms in a San Juan park and happy sunflowers in the paradise of southern Puerto Rico; a college campus in Alabama; a Georgia community theater; an old Florida railroad track and more.
