Six years ago, I had the opportunity to spend some time in Florence, Italy after photographing a wonderful wedding in Cortona. I spent much of my time wandering the streets of Firenze…. observing… the multi-layered textures, languages from around the globe, scents, character of the stone buildings, walkways, graffiti, remnants/layers of old posters, graffiti – such stimulation for the senses! Tiny shops, limited in space only, housed artisans who share their beautiful creations: jewelry, leathers, hand -fashioned clothing and more. During these wanderings, I stumbled upon a small and most charming organic coffee shop – Caffe Latte. After savoring the best (and very large) latte of my trip, I spent a few hours with the owner, Vanna. We discussed her hopes for peace in Iraq and other parts of the globe, as well as other topics including photography, the history of her store space (an old butcher shop – notice the cow set in the marble bar), vegan food and more. I made some nice images, but what remained were sweet little memories; memories evoked by the little gifts of experience from that day. The black and white image of Vanna standing at the table struck me so, that I have it hanging in my home – unusual, as this photographer simply doesn’t display her work in her home (there are always exceptions!). The photo of Vanna was among several pieces exhibited in my old warehouse space with the paintings of Sarasota artist Cindy Perkins made from the same adventure.
Time passes… I again visited Florence in mid-July. The images shot in 2006 are on a dvd and I set out to find Caffe Latte – not by a Google search (or because I had the foresight following my first visit to actually record the address!), but the original manner of walking those delightful narrow Florentine streets; getting a sense of where I had been; eying the details and the essence of the neighborhood. The peace flag was a giveaway and I entered the space that floats loosely in my memory. The tables, the light fixtures, the peace flag, her apron, Vanna’s glasses and the twinkle in her eyes – fixed in time, as if not one moment had passed. She was ambivalent about the dvd but I left it on the counter, stayed awhile and took a few more images. Toward the end of my visit, Vanna perked up and suggested she could have a friend print the image. I assured her it would be worth the effort. She sat for a couple of snaps. She’s been in the storefront since 1985, serving homemade eats and amazing caffe latte … Perhaps I’ll see her again; perhaps this experience will remain as one of those special memories of a moment (make that moments) in time – brief encounters offering this individual vivid imagery that excited my senses on many levels. I’m grateful for that.
(the first image, bw of Vanna standing, shot in 2006. Enhanced; all others snapped in 2012, unmanipulated, 35mm and iPhone app)

Barbara Banks’ limited edition fine art prints at State of the Arts Gallery
State of the Arts Gallery has become the foremost source for collectors focusing on acquiring contemporary fine art created by Sarasota artists. From its inception six years ago, the gallery has spotlighted professional, local career artists residing in the Sarasota. The Sarasota community is rich with visual arts and these artists have dedicated their lives to creating fine art, adding to Sarasota’s cultural “canvas.” http://www.sarasotafineart.com/
The Sarasota Ballet is the Gulf Coast of Florida’s first and only professional ballet company. Under the Direction of Iain Webb, the Sarasota Ballet has expanded its repertoire to include works by world renowned choreographers such as Sir Frederick Ashton, Dame Ninette de Valois, Antony Tudor, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Robert North, John Cranko, Hans van Manen, Andre Prokovsky, Matthew Bourne and Dominic Walsh. Recently, dance and theatre critic for the New York Times Alastair Macaulay noted “…the Sarasota Ballet (in its 18th year, and directed since 2007 by Iain Webb) has suddenly become America’s foremost exponent of Ashton ballets.” http://www.sarasotaballet.org/
We appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this beautiful Sarasota wedding, coordinated by NK Productions (nkproductions.net). A wonderful time was had by all, while we made pictures of cherished memories, including that fun and chilly holiday portrait session on Siesta Key!
We love designing books and strive to create works of art that clients and families will enjoy and pass along for years to come. The black leather cover of this book frames a design that is distinctive and clean. Our production artist, Adam Carnes, a trained and skilled painter in his own right, applies his artistry to design pages and enhance the images for each one-of-a-kind piece. Below are a few sample pages.

Soon after meeting Alia and Ben, Alia invited me to attend her henna party on the Thursday prior to the wedding. Because we had become friendly, the invitation seemed more “just because” inclusive, so I could experience the fun and fest and food… but of course I could only imagine the visuals that might result! As the excitement of the wedding week unfolded, I was thrilled to enter a room draped with beautiful fabric, displays of adorned boxes, candles, lots of sweet and savory munchies and wonderful scents. Oh, and the people were fun too!! AND, the henna application had commenced – Alia’s hands and feet took about 3.5 hours! The resulting images were more than I had imagined and the interactions, love, laughs, festivities were wonderful to share. There ARE times when I feel I’m part of the family/friends – and this was indeed one of those. Thank you, Alia and Ben, for the new friendship! Henna: Insiya C, [email protected]

Passover brought family from afar (grandpa had not traveled in a decade) and the four generations offered ample opportunities for snapping individuals and various family combinations. We enjoyed the comradeship, soft sand, salty breeze, cool water, sea birds fishing for dinner and beautiful and changing colors of the light as the sun took its dive into the Gulf. Rona, Eric, Stephanie, Charlie and family – Passover blessings to be remembered!

One of my favorite shoots… EVER! The April issue of Style Magazine, a publication of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, features a shoot we did at Tim Watnum’s property, where he is meticulously restoring two vintage trailers – fantastic backdrop for this themed shoot. We had wonderful items from Everything But the Girl/The Closet, Designing Women Boutique, Sarasota Architectural Salvage, Posh on Palm. Coral Pleas and her team from Cutting Loose were the masters of the hair and make-up artistry. The images speak for themselves and need little explanation…FABULOUS!
A recent visit to New York afforded me the opportunity to look at lots of great art (in addition to photographing a client – more in next blog). If you’re headed that way before April 10, DO see the Stieglitz, Strand, Steichen special exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum. Stieglitz’s images of O’Keeffe (especially her sculptural hands) are sensual; Steichen’s three Flatiron prints are brooding. And one must appreciate the science AND artistry of these works. While I love digital imaging, these pieces include silver platinum, gelatin silver, palladium, photogravure and gum bicarbonate over platinum – far more than just a click of the shutter (believe me, I’m not minimizing the “click” and the timing thereof). And the autochromes, made with potato starch and dyes, were magnificent! These early photographers had to master both the visual medium and the science of chemical compounds, papers, exposure, etc.
While in Chelsea, the Parkeharrison pieces from The Architect’s Brother, really blew me away. The haunting, highly constructed images are based on a concern for the environment and include RC prints on panel, hand painted and layered with encaustic and photogravures. Beautiful, eery, multilayered. I have to have their book!
And, of course, had to check out Staley-Wise and Janet Borden Galleries. Always great photography in these two galleries on lower Broadway.
