The recently published 2017 LifeLink project, photographed by Barbara Banks Photography, highlights individuals and families impacted by organ and tissue donation – Gifts of Life. These amazing individuals and their families represent varying ages, varying communities, diverse backgrounds. What they have in common is a bond of giving and/or receiving life through an organ transplant. The precious Gifts of Life – heart, liver, kidney or other lifesaving organ given by an incredible act of compassion and grace – generate countless stories of love, loss, gratitude, survival, struggle, hope, life and death. We traveled to Puerto Rico, Georgia, Alabama and to various Florida communities to meet and photograph these ordinary AND extraordinary people. The photos and stories shared represent PEOPLE, ALL PEOPLE. We shared with people in their homes and their environs: a rural Georgia cattle ranch and an historic courthouse; the glistening waters of Puerto Rico; the vibrant blossoms in a San Juan park and happy sunflowers in the paradise of southern Puerto Rico; a college campus in Alabama; a Georgia community theater; an old Florida railroad track and more. Each year, we at Barbara Banks Photography are honored to embark on shooting LifeLink Foundation’s annual report. LifeLink is “a non-profit community service organization dedicated to the recovery of life-saving and life-enhancing organs and tissue for transplantation therapy.” What is most rewarding are the individuals and families whose stories of endurance, life, and sometimes, death, touch us to the core. Each photo is an experience – an unforgettable one, because of those stories. Whether it is a family who has experienced a deep loss or an individual who has been given a second chance at life – every person has a story. We are fortunate and grateful to be granted access into the very personal pages of these stories to share a glimpse and to try to convey each in a single photograph. While we’re not able to show the images in full now, we want to share little snips AND the appreciation we feel at this juncture in the project.

Recently, we made a trip to Puerto Rico to capture some of the images. Our crew included our always cheerful LifeLink rep, Maressa (“don’t worry…”), creative director Sheila Sons (SheDesignsinc.com), production assistant Kayla Harnish, bilingual and entertaining driver Francisco, and photographer, Barbara Banks. The beaches were hot and oh-so-beautiful, the lizards green, water azure, coconuts afloat, and our Spanish was no better than last year (that’s not saying much!), but with the help of our Puerto Rico hosts, guides (and entertainers! …we laugh a lot…), Francisco and Maressa, we found and enjoyed great locations and wonderful people. PS: Nothing compares to the hospitality in Puerto Rico!!! Thank you to all of you!

The 2013 LifeLink Faces of Transplantation is just off the press and delivered to the first audience: those whose loved ones died and gave the Gift of Life. In the coming weeks, many medical professionals and transplant recipients will receive this annual publication, which tells the stories of individuals and families whose lives have been impacted by this amazing process – organ and tissue donation and transplantation. The pages shown here are a sampling from this year’s project, one the most touching photography assignments in which I have the good fortune to participate. Each year our team is deeply moved by the experiences during our photo shoots: the stories, the strength – the goodwill shown by people toward their fellow human beings, most of whom will never meet face-to-face. We are again privileged this year to have the opportunity to provide the photography component of LifeLink Foundation’s annual report. Though these are mere segments of the photographs that will be revealed later this year, our experiences while working on this project inspire us to write now! The location portraits and text tell of the extraordinary deeds and challenges of individuals impacted by organ and tissue donation: donor families and those who receive life-saving transplants. The interactions while executing each photo touch me to the core and the experiences shared stay with me year after year. I’m unable to say more at this point, but feel compelled to share some snippets. When the piece is published in October, we’ll post some of the pages, text and photographs of these ordinary people who have had extraordinary experiences.
